Black Friday or Green Planet?

November 28, 2019

In recent years the surge of sales on Black Friday have extended beyond the day to become almost a week of savings. Many people using it as an opportunity to shop for Christmas Presents, others simply grabbing things they’ve had their eye on for a while.

However whilst the prices drop the environmental impact of these purchases stays the same. Every time we buy a new item most of its environmental damage has already been committed.

Whilst it's the businesses perpetuating this cycle it has to fall on us consumers to break it. Even though many vegan business also indulge in this week of sales (including us in the past!) we think things need to change. We’re tempted here to go on an anti-capitalist rant here but we’ll stay on topic…

So what can we do?

Well number one is we need to rise up and show our resistance and solidarity with the climate crisis. After all it’s the richest 10% that are responsible for nearly 50% of global emissions yet it will be the poorest and those in native communities that will suffer the most.* So join your local protest (find a climate strike here!), write to brands and ask them what they are doing to combat emissions or better yet boycott Black Friday all together. We’ll be at the protests ourselves and HeartCure will not be shipping any orders on the Friday 29th of November.

If you still feel like you need something or want to buy gifts that are consciously produced, shop second hand first! There are many amazing ways to do this now, from charity stores, Depop, clothes swaps or the classic Ebay.

HeartCure is proud to announce that this weekend will be the official launch of our long in the works, ReNew scheme! We will be choosing one design every month to print on YOUR clothes. That’s right, you send us a t-shirt or hoody you already own and we’ll bring it a new lease of life with a HeartCure original design screen printed on with water based inks. You’ll now also be able to buy any of our second hand clothes that have been sent back to us or send us back your own for credit to use on our store!

In the end we understand that Black Friday sales offer a chance for many to afford things they may not be able to otherwise. We recognise that access is important and so therefore we will still be having sales on our clothing and offering bundle deals. So if you feel like you need some HeartCure gear we’re here to help, but please choose with love and we hope this helps people afford ethical eco stuff that may not be able to otherwise!

It’s clear that things need to change, we must extend far beyond veganism if we want to create a fair, just and healthy planet for us all.

Thank you so much for reading, please let us know your thoughts and tips and we hope you have a great week!
